Discover delightful walking routes near Riga

There are various conferences taking place in Latvia this autumn, and without doubt it is a great time to enjoy Latvian nature. For your convenience, we have summarized some of the most interesting walking routes near Riga, that can be easily reached by a public transportation.

Mežaparks

Mežaparks is one of the greenest, and also one of the most prestigious neighborhoods of Riga, as well as a popular recreation area. The major cultural and recreational park Mežaparks opened in 1949. One of the remaining forested areas in Riga city became an integral part of the park and gave it its identity. Enjoy a walk in the park, go rollerblading along the park’s asphalt trails, take a bicycle ride through the cycling lanes or jump on a mountain bike to ride a forest path!

Ragakāpa Nature Park

The area of the park is 150 hectares. Ragakāpa Nature Park is a specifically protected natural area formed in order to preserve the dunes covered with ancient pine forests and biodiversity on the sea coast.

In order to introduce visitors to the natural values of the territory, two nature trails have been established in the park. One of the trails runs through the pine forest, and is about 2 km long and mostly consists of wooden boardwalks. There are also information stands and benches, and in its steepest places - stairs. Near the Open-Air Museum by the stairs you can also get to the other nature trail. There is no special marking. The main route can be found by wooden walkways and dolomite rubble covering.

The Blue Mountains

The Blue Mountains are a part of the Ogre Great Kangaru Range, which is characterized by a pronounced terrain. Walking, educational, bicycle trails, and cross-country skiing tracks have been created in the park, which is available to hikers, cyclists and other lovers of active recreation in the snow-free period. The Dubkalni reservoir in the park area has particularly clean and clear water, as well as several recreation areas by the water that have been set up there.

The White Dune at Saulkrasti

The White Dune formed as the wind drove beach sand over the clay silt of Baltic Ice Lake. Its white 18 meters high sand outcrop once helped local fishermen find their way home. The dune got its name from its white, hardened layers of sand which look like sandstone. The approximately 4 kilometers long Sunset Trail winds from the White Dune to the center of Saulkrasti. By walking this trail you will be able to see the landscape typical of Saulkrasti, its wide, sandy beach and fore-dunes, the Pēterupi River and tall pine trees growing. Beautiful views of the river valley and the sea can be observed from several vantage points on the trail.

Mangaļsala Jetty

Mangaļsala is the first part of the city that all ships cross when entering the Daugava. Directly from Mangaļsala, the Mangaļsala Dam or East pier, stretches into the sea, it is 2240 meters long and built in the period from 1850 to 1861. The seaward part of the eastern pier consisted of pile structures, which were later poured and covered with stones. The main part of the dam is made of heavy fascines and stones. The Mangaļsala Dam serves as a reinforcement of the right bank of the Daugava.

Park of Culture Palace Ziemeļblāzma

The Palace park can be proud of several historical objects and various newly created recreation areas. During the reconstruction, the rotunda and the mushroom building, based on the columns of the building of the first palace of culture that burned down in 1906, were restored in the park. The avenue of vines, which was originally at such a height that a horse-drawn carriage could pass through it during festivities, was restored, as well as the artificial grotto. A French-style garden with a fountain in the centre was created, a children's playground and a multi-functional recreation and sports area were installed. The ancient tea house with a turret was also restored, as well as a wooden building with columns, creating a modern information centre.

Dzintari Forest Park

The Dzintari Forest Park in Jūrmala is a place for both lovers of active recreation, and also for those who prefer a leisurely stroll in the crisp pine air. The park is located in the heart of Jūrmala, and its most valuable asset is the 200-year-old pine grove and protected habitats, which have remained intact even to this day. Go on a leisurely stroll along the walkways or go rollerblading or enjoy skiing in the illuminated park during winter.. Children can play on three different playgrounds, while enthusiasts of active leisure can go to the skate park or play street basketball.

A short walk in the fresh air will not only give you positive emotions, but will also benefit your health. It's a great way to clear your head after a busy day. Walking is a form of physical activity available to almost everyone, the implementation of which does not require special equipment. It is enough to have the desire to visit and enjoy the most beautiful places in Latvia.
