MEET Valmiera
Valmiera is the biggest town in Latvia's northeastern region of Vidzeme, within driving distance of Estonia and Russia.
It's a self-sufficient regional centre for education, manufacturing and innovation, but also excels at partnerships and collaboration. Back in the day Valmiera was a member of the Hanseatic League. Today, it represents Latvia in the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities, plays an active part in the Gauja National Park tourism cluster, initiates and participates in EU projects. 25 000 people call Valmiera home. They benefit from vast outdoor spaces such as the attraction-packed Park of Senses on the shores of the river Gauja, and the story-filled Vecpuišu parks (Bachelors' Park). Approximately a third of the town is taken up by green space. Valmiera also has its fair share of cultural monuments like the medieval castle ruins and the 13th century St Simon's Church.
A cultural and creative community
Valmiera Theatre and Valmiera Concert Hall are major drivers for local cultural tourism and key venues for meetings and conferences. It's no surprise that a town with such a strong cultural backbone has also fostered creative businesses and initiatives in and around Valmiera such as the Siltumnīca events greenhouse, Kurtuve art space and Valmiermuiža brewery. Restaurants echo the creative spirit in both menus and interiors.
Raising tomorrow's leaders
Students also contribute to the development of Valmiera. Its very own Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences offers programmes in information technology, media and communication studies, mechatronics, tourism management, and other fields with a stable future. The university works closely with the council and local businesses, finding ways to grow together and strengthen the town's economy and reputation. Many graduates stay in Valmiera as it offers solid employment opportunities.
A well-established business environment
Valmiera-based businesses operate in areas such as ICT, mechanical engineering, metal processing, agriculture, construction, forestry, and textile production. Recent years have seen the town attract considerable foreign investment.
If planning a small or medium event and hoping to avoid large, loud and crowded cities, Valmiera may be your perfect match. For further information and ideas get in touch with the local tourism information centre!
